29 km of Mallorca's best flat cycling route · right from our door

29 km of cycling between centuries-old olive groves, character villages, restored stone tunnels and a train that fell silent in the summer of '77. Today it's the most beautiful flat cycling route on the island, and our shop in Cala Millor sits literally next to the trail. We'll tell you how to ride it, which bike to choose, and where to stop for the kind of coffee that makes you smile.

Three dates. One line. Same door.

The old Manacor-Artà railway had three lives — and we've been here for all of them.

THE DREAM
1921

In August 1921, the Manacor railway reached Artà. Steam locomotives crossed the Llevant plains carrying produce from the fields, travellers, and postcards that my family still keeps to this day. It was the umbilical cord connecting eastern Mallorca with the rest of the island.

THE SILENCE
1977

In the summer of '77, an accident brought the line to a sudden close, after 56 years of service. The tracks rusted and the trail slowly disappeared under grass. For three decades, that strip of land was just a memory — older locals pointing to a forgotten embankment: "the train used to pass through there".

THE TRAIL
TODAY

The Mallorca Island Council brought the route back as a Greenway: 29 perfectly paved kilometres, no cars, flat, connecting Manacor with Artà. And here we are — the third generation of Sancho since 1972 — still right here, metres from the old station, renting bikes to anyone keen to rediscover it.

One route, five villages, zero cars

The Manacor-Artà Greenway runs along 29 km of the old railway line that once connected these two eastern Mallorca towns. It's entirely flat — a ridiculous 50 metres of elevation over the whole route — paved from end to end, and completely separated from traffic. There are 6 rest stops, restored stone tunnels, and views over Cala Millor, Sa Coma and Punta N'Amer. Which means anyone can ride it: kids from 6 years old, grandparents on e-bikes, family groups, road cyclists looking for a gentle warm-up, and simply anyone who fancies a stress-free pedal.

The route crosses several villages, each with a very different character: Manacor, the industrial capital of the east; Sant Llorenç des Cardassar with its Gothic church visible from afar; the small, farming Son Carrió; and Son Servera with its shops, markets and bars to refuel. The route ends in Artà, a medieval village crowned by the Sant Salvador sanctuary. Each one has its old station, now restored — some are cultural centres, others simply benches where you can sit and eat.

How to get there from Cala Millor

Three ways to hit it, depending on the kind of day you've got.

Recommended

Via Son Servera · 5 min by bike

Walk out of our Cala Millor shop, take the bike lane to Son Servera (just 4 flat coastal kilometres), and connect to the Greenway right by the old station. It's the most direct connection and the one we recommend by default.

Via Sant Llorenç

If you want to start from the Manacor end with the whole route ahead of you, take a car or taxi 8 km to Sant Llorenç and join the line there. Bring the bike from the shop on a roof rack, or use our free home delivery in Cala Millor / Cala Bona.

Via Manacor · full route

If you want all 29 km, the best option is to have us deliver the bike to Manacor or take the Palma-Manacor train with your bike. You arrive, pedal to Artà, and we pick you up at any point on the way back.

💡 The local secret nobody tells you

From Sancho Bikes Cala Millor, the most comfortable ride is Son Servera → Artà → Son Servera (about 35 km round trip), skipping the Manacor-Sant Llorenç stretch which is the least scenic. You get the best of the route.

The unwritten guide: three generations knowing every metre

Look, there's no official Greenway guide that'll tell you what I'm about to tell you here. This is the Sancho's Boys guide — three generations of mechanics and cyclists who've spent fifty years watching people pedal past our shop. We know which stretches are most photogenic, which bar is the good one, which tunnel has the best light at 9 in the morning, and why you should stop for coffee before Sant Llorenç and not after.

We're the only cycle rental shop literally stuck to the trail. It's not marketing, it's geography: walk out the door, ride 4 km on the bike lane to Son Servera, and you're already on the Greenway. So when someone says "rent a bike near the Greenway", they're really saying "come to Sancho's".

Three stops you can't miss

Three generations of knowledge, in three cards.

Stop 1 · KM 8

☕ Sant Llorenç · Coffee at the old station

8 km into the ride, just as the sun starts to bite, the old station — now a square — has several bars. Order a sobrasada and honey sandwich and an iced coffee. Costs almost nothing and sets you up perfectly for the next kilometres.

Stop 2 · KM 14

🏛️ Son Carrió · The stone tunnels

The stretch between Sant Llorenç and Son Servera is our favourite. You'll pass through centuries-old olive groves, traditional country houses, and the restored stone tunnels of the old railway, with their original sandstone walls preserved. Stop for a photo at the second tunnel — the way the light comes in first thing in the morning is spectacular.

Stop 3 · KM 29

⛪ Artà · Climb to the sanctuary

You arrive at the old Artà station, now a public library with garden and toilets. If you've got an e-bike or E-MTB, climb the 2 steep kilometres to the Sant Salvador Sanctuary. The view of the entire Canyamel bay from up there justifies any pain. Then come down and grab something at Plaça del Conqueridor before heading back.

Frequently asked questions about the Manacor-Artà Greenway

Is it suitable for kids?

Absolutely. It's flat, paved and car-free. Our own kids have ridden it from 6 years old. For families with younger ones, we have child trailers and baby seats.

Is there shade?

Some stretches yes, some no. The central section (Sant Llorenç → Son Carrió) is fairly well covered by trees. We recommend setting off before 9:30 in July-August, or after 17:00. And of course, hat and sunscreen.

How long does it take?

Continuous tourist pace: 2 hours one way. With coffee and photo stops: 3-4 hours. Comfortable round trip: half a day.

Can I rent in Cala Millor and drop off in Artà?

Yes, but with a logistics fee (we'll pick the bike up in Artà). Talk to us before booking to coordinate. For most people, the easiest is a round trip from Cala Millor.

What if I get a puncture mid-ride?

Bikes leave the shop fully serviced. But things happen. That's why every bike comes with a puncture repair kit + spare tube and our phone-in technical support is available all day. If you can't fix it yourself, we'll come and find you.

Do I need to book in advance?

In high season (May-October) yes, especially for e-bikes and weekends. Booking online at sanchobikes.com guarantees your bike and includes free helmet, lock and map.
